Hello, I’m Jason Hall. I’ve spent 25 years in the healthcare industry, following a decade in banking. My career has centered on data: I started in Quality Assurance, testing data propagation jobs, then I moved into Test Data Management, where I've built an ETL-based process from scratch that quadrupled our environment setup speed. I’ve also worked with FHIR interoperability standards, and created a process to introduce synthetic data into testing environments. Finally, I have a love for data analysis, visualization, and BI.
I’m passionate about continuous improvement, especially with my own knowledge. Every day, I set aside time to learn new skills and tools to keep pace with the ever-evolving IT landscape. Below, I’ve outlined some of these efforts.

Implement homelab reverse proxy
January 2025 - TBD
Implement a reverse proxy/HTTPS certificates into the homelab. I have VPN functionality currently, but I don't usually need full internal network access. NginX Proxy Manager/Let's Encrypt seem to be the best option for me.

Migration from UnRAID to Proxmox/TrueNAS for homelab

For years I've run UnRAID as the main hub for my homelab. I wanted to separate storage and compute for various reasons, and have completed this recently.
Big workspace upgrade

Python
Python is at the core of many of the directions I'd like to take my learning, from data science, data engineering, machine learning, and AI. I aim to be proficient in Python itself, plus several libraries, in early 2025.

My goal is to be valuable to any company I work for in many different ways. Any company that creates, collects, handles, analyzes, and disseminates data needs employees with these skills. This will be learned in a variety of online sources.
Various Learnings
I'm advanced to highly-advanced at some skills, but there's always more to learn. Though I am very familiar with SQL, git/Gitlab, test data management practices, and data pipelines, I want to further my knowledge in these areas to truly master them. These skills are 100% applicable to my current job, as well as most prospective jobs I'd be interested in. This is therefore a high-priority task for me.

Homelab Migration
For years I've run UnRAID reliably on a single server. However, for both learning opportunities and in observance of data center best practices, I wanted to separate stoage and compute. Therefore, the old unified UnRAID server became a storage-only NAS using TrueNAS running ZFS (2 x RAIDZ2 vdevs with 6 HDDs each), and I've built a new Proxmox application server to hold all LXC/Docker containers and applications. This separation allows a lot more flexibility and learning opportunities.

This was on my to-do list for the homelab for about a year and is now running great. Shout out to tteck (RIP) for his magnificent Proxmox scripts. This indirectly contributed to work, as I can now run a wider vaiety of applications, such as my own FHIR server and synthetic FHIR data generator.
Homelab
I've run some sort of home server since 2012, with FreeNAS 8.3. I started with 6 4TB drives in RAIDZ2 for 16TB usable space, an astronomical amount for me at the time. I switched to UnRAID around the time of the ill-fated version 10 upgrade, and only just recently switched back to TrueNAS - unbelievably, on the same SuperMicro motherboard/Xeon/ECC RAM I used in 2012! So far, it's still working great as a pure NAS. I run all kinds of services and apps, and am currently creating a (very) complex map diagram of my full home network.
Scuba
My wife and I are both avid scuba divers. I hold an Advanced Scuba diver certification, and she holds a Rescue diver certification (one higher than me). Though the water is cold, we frequently dive in Florida's many springs (they are all 72 degrees F year-round, as they are all fed by the state aquifer), though our favorite destination are various sites around the Carribean. The deepest I've been is about 100 feet deep, which is close to the deepest allowable based on the oxygen/nitrogen percentage of the Nitrox air blend I prefer to use. Descending deeper than that risks oxygen toxicity.
Movies/Home Theater
I love my movies, and watch them whenever I can. Having a great surround sound system with multiple subwoofers, a big OLED screen, and a media server to stream high-bitrate legal movie rips means trips to the theater are no longer necessary. Backyard movies with neighbors in great weather is fantastic. I just need a popcorn machine!
College Athletics
My wife and I frequently go to football games at her alma mater, the University of Central Florida (UCF) in nearby Orlando. There's not much like the energy in a good game. We've also recently begun going to basketball games as well.
Biking
I enjoy riding for some fresh air and sunshine. Though I have a mountain/offroad bike, about 75% of the time I stick to paved routes. There's a great, 14-mile trail (28 miles round trip) that used to be a railroad, and is now a multi-use trail as a result of the nationwide Rails-to-Trails program I use frequently.
Lawn Care
Some may call me crazy, but I love getting outside and caring for the yard. Whether it's edging, weed trimming, mowing or blowing, I love the smell and look of a well-cared for yard. I mow twice a week in the peak growing season of Florida. Fun fact: my grass type is St Augustine, and is the Floratam variant. Floratam was engineered/developed to be more resistant to chinch bugs, which are common here. The University of Florida and Texas A&M university created Floratam, hence the name. FLORA for Florida, and TAM for Texas A&M.
